A Confident Mom

DAY 5 OF 7

A Heart Set Free

A few years ago, I realized I needed to set boundaries on my social media scroll. It isn’t that social media is bad; it’s just that too much of it, too often, is not good for me. The more time I spent in the land of “what everyone else is doing,” the more I felt like I wasn’t doing enough—not as a mom, wife, friend, or human being.

I decided to take a rest from social media for a week to break my habit, and then I set daily and weekly time limits in my phone settings to help me. And once I got over my default habit of picking up my phone for a quick scroll, I started to feel a huge difference emotionally and mentally. I also found a sweet sense of contentment in my everyday life that I had missed.

In Psalm 119, King David describes his love for God’s boundaries and how they put his heart in the best place to know his Maker and experience the fullness God had for him.

Two of my favorite verses within this psalm are “I run in the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding” (v. 32) and “I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts” (v. 45). Reading these Scriptures reminds me that when God calls me to live within boundary lines, it’s His way of showing me where it is safe for my heart to go.

Whether our boundaries involve overconsuming social media, bingeing on Netflix, doing too much online shopping, or eating too much junk food, one thing we can trust is that God’s boundaries are always for our good.

Are there boundaries you sense God nudging you to set? What would it look like to set incremental boundaries to move toward the life you long for?

Lord, You desire to set my heart free when I’m willing to walk within the boundaries You create for me. Help me number my days with a heart of wisdom and turn away from empty and false illusions of freedom in the things that distract me from what matters most to You and me. Amen.
