Why is sex such a big deal? Waiting until you’re married is something people did in the 50s but not now. I love my boyfriend and we’ve already talked about getting married someday. Isn’t it okay since we’re going to get married?
That kind of thinking is understandable, I know, but since when has being a Christian involved thinking like the world thinks? (Romans 12:1-2)
As followers of Christ and women who believe His Word is true, we’re called to a different way of thinking and living—one that He lovingly designed for our good.
The world sees sex as many different things: an expression of attraction, a measure of personal worth, a natural outcome of affection. But none of them come close to the depth of meaning that it has in God’s eyes.
Scripture tells us that sex brings two people together as one flesh. Because it is such a powerful thing, it should only be experienced in the covenant of a marriage relationship. And marriage…wow; that’s one of God’s greatest creations. It paints the picture of His relationship with His Church, and shows the world through man loving his wife the way Christ loved us, and the wife’s loving her husband the way believers are to love God—and both fully committed to one another. When this relationship is carried out the way God intended it, people who don’t know Jesus Christ can actually get a glimpse of Him through the marriage relationship! Sex is very much part of this dynamic. It shows just how God intends His relationship to be with His people: so close that they are one.
Isn’t this a little different than the casual way the world views sex? It was created to be sacred! Ladies, that’s how we must view it. God loves us enough to make it so much more!
Sex inside of marriage—sexual purity—was created as a beautiful, wonderful thing. Just like you were created a beautiful, wonderful thing. When God provides a husband who is capable of loving you the way He does—completely, boldly, sacrificially and with loyalty, wisdom and strength—you will be given the opportunity to experience sex as God intended it to be.
Don’t settle, ladies. He created you, and you’re worth so much more than that.
P.S. Statistics show that 80% of high school seniors are sexually active by the time they graduate. If that’s you, remember Romans 8:1 and that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. He loves you and will forgive and restore you (1 John 1:9). Begin again with the Lord who removes our sins as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12).
