Ever Wonder Why?

DAY 7 OF 7

Where Do We Go From Here?

Over the past few days, we’ve asked a lot of big questions—questions that maybe created even more questions than you started with. But this curiosity isn’t something to be afraid of—it’s a core part of following Jesus and building our faith.

We won’t always get the answers we desire, but we always have permission to ask. In fact, Jesus instructed us to have faith like a child.

At face value, some people might interpret that as blind faith. But if you’ve ever been around a child for any length of time, you know that they ask a lot of questions. But why they ask questions is often different from the way we ask questions as adults.

Kids don’t ask because they’re skeptical or cynical. They’re genuinely curious. They have an innate sense of wonder at the world around them, and they love exploring and learning more about it. That’s the kind of faith Jesus is asking us to have.

Developing childlike faith is developing a faith that is fueled by imagination and not afraid of investigation.

So faith doesn’t mean having all the answers—otherwise it wouldn’t be faith at all. Instead, it’s choosing to trust in God even when we don’t understand or can’t see the full picture.

Even Jesus’ disciples didn’t have everything figured out, but they chose to follow Him anyway. In Luke 18, Jesus has just finished describing what will happen to Him, and here’s how His disciples react:

The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about. Luke 18:34 NIV

But their level of understanding didn’t influence the level of their obedience. Though they didn’t fully get the plan, they trusted in Jesus, and they followed Him anyway.

Even when Jesus explained really complex concepts like in John 6—leading many people to fall away from Him—His disciples remained committed. Jesus even asks His disciples whether they’re going to leave, but Peter replies:

… “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:68-69 NIV

We know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. There’s no better way than following Him, so even when we don’t understand His plan, we can trust who He is.

So as we wrap up this Plan, know this: God is bigger than your doubts. He welcomes your questions. And our faith doesn’t involve just growing in knowledge, but also growing in our sense of wonder as we choose to follow Jesus and get to know Him better.

Pray: God, give me childlike faith in who You are. Fuel my imagination and my sense of investigation, not being afraid to ask hard questions and discover more of who You are. I trust You, and I know that in You, there is abundant life. Thank You for who You are. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Challenge: Think of ways you can build your childlike faith and wonder in who God is. Then, do something about it!

About this Plan

Ever Wonder Why?

What if faith is less about knowing all the right answers and more about asking hard questions? If you’ve ever wondered why God seems unfair, why He doesn’t always answer our prayers the way we expect, or why a loving God would create hell, this 7-day Bible Plan, accompanying Pastor Craig Groeschel’s Ever Wonder Why? series, is for you.
