Uncommen: A Distorted View

DAY 3 OF 5

How Others See You

Matthew 16:26 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?"

We all need to buckle up for today's topic as it hits us all right between the eyes. Today, we're talking about how other people see us. There are three types of people when talking about this.

The Showboats

We put on our best watch, shoes, jacket, and polish up the sports car before driving over to the party. We weave in our successes into every conversation or at least try to do that. We make sure we are ready to be seen before keeping our image in the best possible light. We extend ourselves financially to make sure we let people know we make money. We are more concerned about how people see us more than how God sees us.

The Pretenders

We are the covert operatives that pretend that other people's opinions of us don't matter. But, of course, we want to be accepted, liked, and maybe even admired a little bit. We want you to know we are well-read, well-educated, and overall a well-rounded professional. Of course, we're hurt when people don't give us the amount of respect we think we deserve. But we'd never let on.

The Unconcerned

We are the ones that may have been one or both of the previous examples and now are unplugged from the game. But we may have overcompensated and have removed all filters and sound judgment. As a result, we have taken on an "us against the world" type of attitude, which usually leads to isolation.

Proper Reflection

There is a God-honoring position that is concerned with how others see us. After all, we are supposed to reflect Christ in our lives. Humility is underrated and doesn't usually show up on the most recent social media posts.

As our scripture said, "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?"

Uncommen Questions:

Do you fall in any of our first three categories? If so, what can you do to move to the fourth?

Are you more concerned about impressing others or in reflecting Christ in your day-to-day life?

What steps can we take to adjust our desire to be seen and admired by others?

Uncommen Challenge:

I challenge us to reflect Christ in all we do and be happy when someone notices and gives God the Glory.

About this Plan

Uncommen: A Distorted View

We take mirrors for granted these days as they are so commonplace in our everyday lives. But original mirrors were not the reflective glass we are used to today but rather polished stone, gold, or even brass. These tended to be murky, distorted surfaces that didn't do a very good job of reflecting the true self. Join us as we adjust our perspective.
