TOWARD THE DEATH
“Better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for that is the end of all men; and the living will take it to heart.”
Ecclesiastes 7:2
The super-luxury San Diego Hills cemetery in Karawang, West Java, doesn't give visitors the impression of being spooky and lonely at all. This place is even more like a tourist place to relax and unwind with 500 hectares of land and a gate that looks like an elite residential area gate. On either side of the entrance, there are neat green meadows and rows of graves without tombstones. That is a new and unique burial concept.
Whether the cemetery has an extraordinary shape like this tomb or looks lonely and scary than the usual cemetery we often encounter, the cemetery is the end place of human life's journey in this mortal world. Our life in this world is limited by time. No matter how long we live, our passage of time will eventually stop, and when our time stops, there is someone who will take us to where our bodies lie. If we have enough money, we might be able to book an extravagant place or just be laid in an ordinary public cemetery. Either way, a funeral is a sign that our time is short.
Many questions arise in our short life. One of the questions is, "Are we living our life meaningfully?” It doesn't matter how long we have lived because what matters is whether our lives have been meaningful to ourselves, our parents, family members, church, and other people. Time is too precious for us to waste. Time is too expensive for us to ignore. Time cannot go backwards, and once it moves forward, time will stop for each of us when we die. We have to think seriously about this matter. When our time stops, there are two eternal places where we will go: eternal life or eternal death. Both places are defined by how we live right now. Ensure that we will enter eternal life after our earthly death by believing and accepting Lord Jesus as Savior and working out our salvation with fear (respect) and trembling. Don't be late because one day will be expensive for your soul.
Reflection
1. Have you lived according to the will of God? Or are you still living as if time would never end?
2. How are you preparing to spend eternity with God?
Application:
Learn to use our time with things that are good, pleasing, and glorifying our Heavenly Father.
