The Battle Is the Lord's

DAY 3 OF 7

Fighting in the name of the Lord

Today we read a story about a young man, David, who stands up to defend the honor of the Lord. Israel is at war with the Philistines and they are “greatly afraid”. The Philistines have a champion fighter called Goliath, a man over 2 meters tall with impressive armor. He considers himself invincible. The Israelites are challenged to send one of their men to duel with Goliath, but nobody dares fight him. For forty days, Goliath comes every morning and evening to insult “the army of the living God”.

When David hears about this, he declares himself ready to accept the challenge because he can’t stand it that the Lord’s name is being dishonored. He is only a boy and does not even have a uniform or a sword, but he is sure that God will help him: “All the people gathered here will know that the Lord doesn’t need swords or spears to save people. The battle belongs to the Lord” (1 Samuel 17:47).

And he is right. David puts a stone in his sling, he slings it… and it hits Goliath right between the eyes. The champion fighter is killed.

David was ready to risk his life for God’s sake. Are you ready to stand up when his name is being insulted?

About this Plan

The Battle Is the Lord's

The Battle Is the Lord’s. There is a spiritual battle going on between God and Satan (see the reading plan “The Great Battle”). There are also a lot of wars and battles going on between humans. And sometimes there is a clear connection between the two. This reading plan covers several Bible stories about earthly battles where the Lord was clearly involved.
