Worship With Your Whole Life
By Nick Kalb
Story
When I started following Jesus, I had the feeling I should be doing more. I went to church, but God felt so big inside of me it was like He couldn’t fit inside just the church service! One day, I was asked to help clean the church, and I said, "Yes!". Every week, someone would pick me up early and I would help a group of people to get the church ready for the service. Cleaning on its own isn’t fun (I had the world’s messiest room!), but there was something about cleaning the church that made me feel like I was doing it with God, so it was fine. Whether I was mopping the floor or cleaning toilets, it was fun because I felt like it was just me and God, together.
Once my mom found out what I was doing, she requested the people at church to ask me to do the same with my bedroom. I was really embarrassed when they talked to me about it, but it made sense. I realized that if I wanted my time doing stuff at church to count, I needed to be the same way at home. Once I realised cleaning my bedroom was just as important to God, everything in my life suddenly seemed like an opportunity for me and God to do stuff together. It was through that experience that I learned that cleaning was an act of worship.
Bible
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”—Roman 12:1 (NIV)
Think
We think of worship as something that happens at church when the music plays and people raise their hands. In kid’s worship, there’s music but lots of movement too! The thing is, worship is too big for a church alone to contain!
Worship means we give something to God. In ancient Israel, people gave Him animals. God would get His part, and the worshipper would get some too. In that way, it was like God and the worshipper were sharing a meal.
So worship is also about us enjoying being close to God. Since our whole lives belong to Him, there’s no limit to what we can give God! That also means that enjoying Him never has to end. We can worship God in everything we do, as long as we do it with Him.
Do Something
What would you like to do with God? Find something at home that you think God wants you to do and then do it with Him! You can also find something to do at church that you could do with God. There’s lots of stuff there too!
Pray
Dear God, thank You for giving me the chance to get to know You through worship. Help me to remember I can worship You anytime I want. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
