Women of the Bible You Need to Meet

DAY 4 OF 14

Rahab

For further reading see Joshua 2:1-24

Rahab is one of the many examples in the Bible of finding faith in an unexpected place. She is not an Israelite. She is also a prostitute. But she proves here to be a strong woman of faith. She stands in contrast to many Israelites. They experienced God’s power in rescue but often failed in faith. But Rahab observes it from a distance and concludes that here is “God in heaven above and the earth below.” At the same time, she also reveals herself to be the able protector of her family, bargaining for their safety. She may indeed have turned to prostitution to support her family. Like Tamar, Rahab is another non-Jewish ancestor of Jesus and lauded twice for her faith in the New Testament (Heb 11:31, James 2:25). Rahab alerts us to the faithfulness of those we might dismiss. God sees people differently from us.

Have you been surprised by the people God works through, and what has that changed for you?

PRAYER

Lord, I confess that I have sometimes dismissed people. Help me to see others with your eyes. Amen.

About this Plan

Women of the Bible You Need to Meet

There are many women we know well from the Bible: Eve, Sarah, Mary. But there are others who are less known to us. This series will look at 22 biblical women. We see midwives, daughters, queens, prophets, disciples, teachers, mothers and grandmothers. Why have these women been included and named in the Bible? What do they have to tell us about God and about ourselves?
