Marriage That Works

DAY 5 OF 5

The Covenant that Lasts

Do you think of marriage as a contract—an agreement that includes conditions for mutual benefit that must be fulfilled to remain valid? We may talk about vows and permanence, but some people approach marriage merely as an agreement to meet each other’s needs.

And when needs are no longer being met, the contract is on shaky ground.

But marriage not just a contract. It’s a holy covenant—a sacred promise.

A covenant is more than just an agreement. It’s an unbreakable commitment that creates a secure environment in which intimacy can grow deeper without the threat of being violated.

Intimacy cannot grow in an insecure environment. It requires a husband and wife to be vulnerable with each other and exercise complete trust

Every human being longs for someone who can look into their eyes, see all their faults and flaws, and still love them. But because we’re all desperately insecure, we pose and posture to hide our flaws. We settle for superficial love.

But superficial relationships don’t feed the soul. We really need to be loved in spite of ourselves.

That’s why God brings us into a covenant relationship with Him rather than just making a contract with us. He wants us to be secure in His love and grow in intimacy with Him. And since marriage is designed as reflection of that relationship, it’s a covenant too.

Just as we become members of the body of Christ, a husband and wife become one flesh, fully committed, choosing sacrificial and enduring love. Each partner loves the other in spite of themselves.

That’s a costly kind of love, but it comes with amazing benefits. It’s also backed by God’s promises. He is a strong supporter of your marriage because he’s the Master Designer behind it.

No marriage is beyond hope. No broken covenant is irredeemable. No relationship is past the point of repair. Bring your willing heart to Him, receive the guidance and power He gives you, and experience the satisfaction and fulfillment He designed you to enjoy.
