The Sandwich Generation

DAY 4 OF 4

Growing up I saw a lot of pictures of Jesus on the walls of our church and in people’s houses. As a kid, I did not like them. They seemed weird to me and never looked like I thought Jesus should look. There was only one picture of Him that I did like. It was Jesus laughing. It was not a smile or a forced laugh. It was a belly laugh. Jesus's face was alive with joy. I think it is easy for us to forget that God has a sense of humor.

Think about it this way: We have a sense of humor, and we were created in His image so He must have one too. He loves to laugh just as much as we do. When Kimberly told the story of her dad sending cat calls to a pretty lady in the church parking lot, I thought about that picture of Jesus and thought God was probably laughing too. Humor is a gift God gives us. It helps us through tough times. It gives us a reprieve from the hard work of life.

As we close this reading plan, I love the last things Lynn said as he talked about community. If you are not in a small group, I encourage you to get into one. We need community. We need people to do life with. We need them to be there for us, and we need to be there for them. We need people to laugh with!

After watching the video, answer the questions below.

  • Think of a time when you saw God’s sense of humor in action. Share that story with someone.
  • How does having a sense of humor make it easier to take the “punches” of life?
  • What are three benefits you see to being in a small group?
  • Do you see any negatives to being in a small group? If so, how can you work through them?
  • No matter what is going on in your life today, will you commit to finding a small group and embracing the community you will find there?

About this Plan

The Sandwich Generation

Research estimates nearly half of adults are assisting a parent AND raising a young child or supporting a grown child. If that’s you, welcome to the club. In this plan by Dr. Kim, we meet Lynn and Kimberly, who have two children plus a parent living with them. They felt God leading them to open their home to Kimberly’s dad. We’ll look at the challenges and blessings of this decision.
