Wifey for Lifey

DAY 2 OF 5

I Got the Power

My husband is a physician. When physicians finish their final training, they are celebrated with a graduation ceremony. Each graduate says a speech of gratitude and the whole thing is a pretty big deal. As I sat in a graduation ceremony, I observed that the male graduates would thank whoever they needed to, making jokes of some sort, but as soon as they spoke about either their wife or mom, they would break down and get very emotional. Every single male graduate cried when speaking of the women in their life.

Women are powerful. Men are known to be tough, but a woman has a special touch. A proverb says that a helpful wife can either be a jewel for her husband or be like cancer to his bones. That is the power a wife has on her husband. The way you are in your day-to-day interactions with your husband will give him life or kill him—kill his roles, his passion, and even the marriage. You can bless or curse him.

Are you speaking life to your husband? Or are you nagging him, day after day, about everything? Another proverb says, “Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.” Surprisingly, the next verse says, “Find a good wife, you find a good life—and even more; the favor of God!” The proverb is not referring to finding just any wife, but a good wife. Being a good wife is difficult because of our shortcomings.

A good wife is not the most domestic one. Being a good wife is more than great cooking or good looks. A wife’s noble character comes from reflecting Jesus. The “good” is Christ in us.

I lived a season in my marriage where I did not like my husband very much. He worked a lot. I felt alone and purposeless, yet the Holy Spirit would tell me to love him. Loving my husband was shown through kindness and patience towards him. Love was asking him how his day was even though it was difficult for me to care. I was tired of raising two babies on my own. I wanted sleep. I wanted someone to love me. You see, the more we focus on ourselves, the less we can see Christ. It is when we focus on Him that we are able to see His goodness. Our complaints are real. Marriage is difficult and brings on many challenges. But if that is our focus, it is difficult to love. Fill your hearts with gratitude so that you will nag less and love more. Embrace God’s love and grace on good and bad days.
