In But Not Of: Here, But Not Home—Part 1

DAY 3 OF 5

Glorify God

Our purpose, while we are here but not home, starts with knowing God. This is different from knowing facts and Bible verses about God. Knowing God means knowing Him deeply, personally, and through experience. The more you know God, the more you will realize just how incredible, holy, powerful, and worthy He is to receive glory.

Glorifying God is the second purpose Jesus talked about as He prayed to his Heavenly Father.

Jesus said in John 17:4 NLT: “I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” So, what does it mean to “bring glory”? Bringing glory to God means giving Him honor and good reputation in the way that you live. Jesus made it simple for us to understand what it means to glorify God.

Jesus said He brought glory to God by “completing the work you gave me to do.” God has work for you to do. Although earth isn’t our home, that doesn’t mean we just kick up our feet and lay back day after day. God is inviting you into Kingdom work, and your participation and completion of this work will bring Him great glory.

What work does God have for you to do? What is it that He has called each of His followers to make their lives all about? The work for us could be summarized with three challenges: love God, love people, and make disciples. You have a purpose here: first, to know God, and second, to glorify God.

How can you give God glory in your life today? How can you love Him more? Who can you love around you? How can you be part of making disciples?

About this Plan

In But Not Of: Here, But Not Home—Part 1

As believers, we live in the tension of the hope that is coming and the reality of the present. This tension is summed up in the longest recorded prayer of Jesus in John 17 as He prays to God over His disciples and all believers to live in this tension in such a way that brings glory, honor, and understanding to His name.
