Find Your Identity: Be You!
Who are you? Like really who are you?
Do you remember that question that Jesus asked? He asked Peter: “But what about you? Who do you say I am?”
The question of identity is one that many people struggle with; and without a right understanding of who you are and what your identity in Christ is, it is very difficult, I’d even go as far as saying impossible to live a successful life.
You’ll often catch me saying that God makes no mistakes, whatsoever. Your very existence is by design and not by default regardless of how you made it to be here on earth.
And by that design, you have a specific purpose and assignment that absolutely no one can fulfill quite the way that you can. However, if you are busy trying to be someone else or confused as to who you are, then you cannot fulfill that assignment that you have been specially designed for.
So it is important that you get your identity right with God.
Here are some misnomers that you might have been struggling with on who you are and who you should be:
👉🏽the definitions and labels from the world;
👉🏽the postulation of family;
👉🏽the opinions of friends;
👉🏽the designs of the church;
👉🏽the description of your business, work, or career; and
👉🏽the desires of your flesh contrary to heaven's design.
This could be distorted further by the vision you carry and the identity that you project unto others. For example, who are you when you go to work, who are you in the church, who are you when you’re out socializing, who are you at home? Do you have a different face for different places? 🤔
It’s time to find out who God has designed you to be, and to live there, to bring to the fullness your design and identity, remembering that He sent Christ to restore you back to His image and to your true purpose and identity.
You find out who you are by reading the word of God and this is two-fold!
There is a general purpose and identity for both you, and all of God's children. For example, we are all made in the image of God, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, we are no longer slaves, we are friends of God, we are precious and God's special treasure, we are God's masterpiece, we are heirs with God and co-heirs with Christ, we are an ambassador for Christ, we are citizens of Heaven, we are seated in heavenly places with Christ . . . and so on!
Then there is a specific purpose, and this becomes clear to us as we read the word, walk with God, and develop a deeper level of intimacy with Him.
When you know who you are in Christ, when you are sure of your identity, then there is no confusion, and you can walk in your purpose and identify successfully!
Jesus was not confused about His identity when He asked Peter the question, but He asked to ensure that Peter understood who He was, because it is in this understanding, which comes only by a close relationship with Christ and revelation from God, that Peter is able to have a true understanding of his identity in Christ and his stand for Him!
A successful person understands who he/she is in Christ and then walks majestically and confidently in that identity and purpose.
Be you, do you . . . live in and live out your identity in Christ.
