5 Keys To a Glorious Prayer Life

DAY 5 OF 6

Day 5: Lord, Help Me Remember and Pray Your Word

Do you ever wonder if you're using the right words when you pray? If so, I have a solution for you that will fix all your uncertainties. That solution is simply learning to pray the Word of God.

God's Word, the Bible, is our best vocabulary for effective prayer. This amazing Book was written by God Himself, and it contains His highest and best will for our lives.

Therefore, if we read the Word of God, we never have to wonder what to pray for. God's will for you and for me is perfectly spelled out within the pages of His Word.

So do you want to fill your prayer life AND your all-day-every-day life with the glory of God?

If so, just pray God's Word back to Him.

Here's how:

1. Pick any Scripture passage to which the Lord leads you.

As an example, I'm going to use Ephesians 1:17-20, which says:

“ ... that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened;

that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 1:17-20).

Then:

2. Turn each phrase of the passage into a personal prayer, applying it to yourself.

For example, if you were praying through the passage above, you would just ask God to make each phrase reality in your life. You would ask Him:

  • to fill you with His glory, since He is the Father of glory and His Holy Spirit dwells in you;
  • to give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him;
  • that the eyes of your understanding would be enlightened;
  • that He would fill you with hope;
  • that you would know the HOPE of His calling deeply and intimately in your heart and spirit;
  • that you would know the riches of His glory in all God's people; and
  • that you would personally experience the exceeding greatness of His power working in you, since you believe in Him.

Then, you would thank Him for Jesus. You would pause right there and just worship Jesus awhile, acknowledging Him as the One who is seated at the right hand of God in heavenly places.

By following these two simple steps, you will have taken this powerful passage from Scripture and used it as the vocabulary for your own God-filled prayer.

When I pray God's Word back to Him, I feel closer to Him in prayer than at any other time.

God's Word is pure and holy. When we embrace it as our heart's desire—wanting nothing more than to obey our beautiful Father and keep His commandments—Jesus keeps His promise from John 14 and manifests Himself to us!

This is why using God's Word as your vocabulary for prayer will transport you into newer, deeper, and more powerful encounters with the Lord every time you pray.

Are you ready to ask God for help praying His Word back to Him?

Pray this with me:

"Heavenly Father, I come before You in Jesus' name.

Father, I thank You that Jesus is Your Word become flesh (John 1:14). You love Your Word so much that You sent Him to die for me. Somehow Jesus and Your Word, the Bible, are the same; and You have magnified Your Word even above Your name (Psalm 138:2).

Father, I openly confess that Your Word is perfect. Your words change and convert my soul, conforming me to Yourself. Your testimonies are sure, and You use Your Word to make me wise.

Your principles are 100% right in every area, and they make my heart rejoice. Your commandments are pure, enlightening my eyes. Your judgments are always true and righteous altogether.

Father God, I confess that Your Word is more to be desired than gold or any other fine thing.

Your Word is sweeter than honey. It is my food and drink. Your Word teaches me and instructs me concerning all things; it is true, and is not a lie. And Your Word carries with it great reward (Psalm 19:7-11). Thank You, Father.

So Father, because I desire Your highest and best will for my lifeand because I desire to draw as close to You as I possibly canI ask right now in Jesus' name that You would teach me to pray Your Word. Help me to study and obey Your Word. Help me to remember it, and teach me how to pray it back to You.

Father God, every time I go to read my Bible, I pray that You would pour out on me Your Spirit of grace and supplication.

Inspire me to pray Your words back to You as I read. Grip my heart with Your Word. Sear it into my heart like a brand! Forever change the very landscape of my heart with Your Word, Lord.

And Father, as You lead me and help me, I ask You to make me a doer of Your Word, not a hearer only. Make me like You, and conform me to the image of Christ as I seek You and honor You in all things.

Thank You, Father, for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus' name, amen."

What's the next step?

To apply this key very practically in your life, simply open your Bible to any passage you like. (Pick a Psalm, such as Psalm 91, if you're not sure where to start.) Then turn each phrase into a prayer for yourself. As you continue this habit over time, the Lord will help you learn to pray His Word back to Him—and to pray it with power.
