Jesus at the Door: Evangelism Made Easy

DAY 4 OF 5

The Gospel Is a Sledgehammer

Many people over the years have asked me about using the words blood and sin in evangelism, and if I think it wise to use those words with the unchurched.

I can see why they think that way. A number of years ago I probably would have thought the same thing, until I understood the power of the Gospel.

It is important to remember that this is a supernatural work. The Gospel is the power of God on display, rescuing anyone who will grab hold of its everlasting lifeline.

Salvation is not a work of the intellect. It is something of the heart. Think of falling in love. It is not with your mind, but with your heart. It is the same when someone opens the door to let Jesus take up residence. We are appealing to hearts, not intellects. He is knocking not on the door of your mind, but rather on the door of your heart.

Look at Jesus and the parables. They are simple earthly stories with a heavenly meaning, filled with such power that countless lives have been forever changed by their simplicity.

There is a supernatural power at work when the Gospel is being proclaimed because the words of God are alive and full of power. If you know the power it produces, you will hold it with the respect it deserves, releasing it at any given opportunity.

I describe the Gospel like a sledgehammer, and we know what happens when you apply a sledgehammer to a surface—something cracks. Sadly, the majority of believers are holding the Gospel like a feather. Instead of breaking down the walls built up around people’s hearts, they are tickling people’s ears with it.

There is no urgency anymore in those people, because they have no concept of the power they wield with the Gospel. But the Gospel is changing lives all over the world, just as it changed your life when you heard it. If you need reminding of the power it possesses, then go take a look in the mirror.

Be encouraged and simply share the Gospel. Then watch the power of God  work.
