Samuel — Prophet and Leader

DAY 4 OF 15

God Speaks

When Samuel grew up, “the word of the LORD was rare” and “there was no frequent vision”. In other words, it was not very common that God spoke to somebody. That explains why Samuel did not immediately recognize God’s voice when he was called at night. He simply thought that the high priest Eli was calling him. Three times young Samuel went to Eli, and then Eli “realized that the LORD was calling the boy” (I Samuel 3:8).

This was a very special occurrence in Samuel’s life, and the start of his “career” as a prophet. From then on, God spoke regularly to him, and he passed these messages on to the people.

Nowadays, God mainly speaks to us through his Word, the Bible. But initially, that might seem just as strange and unrecognizable to you. Do you believe that God speaks to you through the Scriptures? Do you listen to his voice and take his messages to heart?

About this Plan

Samuel — Prophet and Leader

In the first centuries of their existence as a people, the Israelites had no king. Instead, God appointed prophets and judges to lead them. The last prophet-judge was Samuel. He was a faithful leader who wanted to serve the Lord and to seek the best for his people. This reading plan takes you through Samuel’s life in 15 days and contains valuable lessons that are still relevant today.
