The Best: Part 2

DAY 3 OF 8

Prayer: Father, thank you for my ability and opportunity to work for your glory and others’ good! I want my life to be a light in the darkness in every context. Show me more about how you have designed me to make disciples in the name of Jesus Christ!

Disconnected

Over time, as life grows increasingly complex, we often grow increasingly skilled at compartmentalizing what we do. “To focus on this project, I need to stop thinking about that relationship.” “To connect with my family, I need to stop worrying about that email.” While compartmentalizing is a helpful skill for being fully present in important moments, it can also lead us into the mistake of disconnecting elements of life that should, in fact, be connected.

This habit leads many Christians to disconnect their personal devotion from their personal vocation, even though the Bible is abundantly clear that God cares deeply about our work! Dorothy Sayers put it this way: “Let the church remember this: that every maker and worker is called to serve God in his profession and not outside of it.” We can often create a false duality in our lives between the “secular” and “sacred” when the reality is our daily work serves as an opportunity to live out God’s original command to humanity to create and cultivate in His world. As we pursue excellence in our endeavors, God is glorified and the Gospel is proclaimed!

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  1. Do I “live to work” or “work to live”? In other words, do I view work as my ultimate purpose or simply as a necessary evil? Or do I land somewhere in between?
  2. How could I reorient my thoughts, actions, and motivations towards the Lord in my school or workplace?

What’s Next?

  1. Ask God to provide opportunities for you to see how your work connects with His work. Pray for a renewed perspective in your day-to-day interactions and involvements in order to better understand why He has placed you exactly where you are.
