Challenge 1
KNOWING THE GOD WHO CREATED IT ALL
READ: Genesis 1:1—3:24
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” We don’t often think about it, but God is the main character of the biblical story. The One who has existed from eternity called the universe into existence from nothing and then from formless matter created a beautiful and intricate world. Into the garden paradise He designed, God placed the creation’s crown, men and women created inHis image. The One who created the universe also established the laws by which it operates. Although obscured by the consequences of human disobediences as recorded at the end of our reading, these principles are still partially discoverable in the world around us. This is why people who have not yet encountered the Bible often uncover truth.
The Scriptures, however, call on us to search their pages to gain deeper understanding. They promise that if we do so, we will uncover what God reveals about His character and purposes—and what He asks of us. If this is true, anyone who wants to exercise wise leadership should begin by pursuing a fuller knowledge of God, which will lead to a knowledge of the principles that order God’s creation. Throughout this Challenge, we will work through several of these God-established principles that apply to leadership.
Wise leaders will not boast in their wisdom, strength, or riches but in their understanding and knowledge of God. What clues do we find in the reading about why leadership is difficult? What will you do to strengthen your knowledge of God?

About this Plan
The Bible doesn’t discuss leadership like a popular business book. However, since God is the creator of everything that exists as well as the rules and processes by which everything works, the Scriptures do provide principles and examples that give us insight and wisdom into effective leadership. The social and cultural backgrounds of the Bible are different than ours, but the Scriptures contain truth that transcends time and space.
