Isaiah: God's Vision for Our Hearts

DAY 2 OF 6

The Woe of Frivolity

The second woe in Isaiah 5 is the woe of frivolity. These verses specifically address a person who leads a sinful, pleasure-seeking lifestyle. Driven by drinking and partying, they ignore God and the work he has done in their lives. They are spiritually empty instead of having hearts filled with God’s love. These people may think they are leading their lives well but, in the end, will feel disappointed for having wasted the precious time that God has given them.

Many of us are tempted to live according to our own desires of partying, drinking, or gambling. In the moment, those activities often sound enticing. However, God wants us to live for him and do what he created us to do: work! Even before the fall in Genesis and before sin entered the world, Adam and Eve worked the ground. We were made to be productive. To lead a partygoing lifestyle goes against God’s ultimate purpose for us.

The “eat, drink, and be merry” mindset also takes us away from the important aspects of life. Our relationships with God, family, friends, and coworkers are negatively affected when we think only of ourselves. To be frivolous is to be thoughtless. We should instead take time to get to know God and the people around us on a deeper, more intimate level. God places us on this earth to glorify him, so we should make sure we do precisely that with the time and talents that he has gifted us.

Lord, please help me always live for you. As fun as partying may be in the moment, I know that feeling fades and is replaced with emptiness. I want to work and honor you. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do what you created me to do. May I always praise you with my time.
