When You Love A Prodigal

DAY 5 OF 5

Always Welcome Home

The prodigal son described in Luke chapter 15 is more than a character in a story told by Jesus. He is a picture of the way God loves us and welcomes us home even after we have rejected Him. You or someone you know may love a person like the prodigal son. Judy Douglass understands how you feel. It can be heartbreaking to see the ones you love make hurtful decisions. Yet God calls us to love like the Father. Judy describes how she and her husband Steve welcomed their own prodigal son home with open arms every time he returned.
Listen to Judy
Loving someone whose choices hurt you is not easy. Sometimes you must let them face the consequences of their decisions. But embracing them when they return is a reflection of how our Father treats us. God lets us have consequences, yet eagerly watches for us to turn back to Him. Our sin and disobedience hurt God just as those we love can hurt us. But when we return to Him, though we have sinned against Him, He does not withhold His good from us. He runs to us, embraces us, clothes us, and invites us back into His family. He celebrates our return. We are always welcomed home to the home of the everlasting Father.

Apply

  • In the story in Luke 15, how does the father treat his son when he returns? How does that make you feel?
  • How can you apply John 13:34 ("As I have loved you, so you must love one another.") to your own life right now?
