Disruptive Compassion

DAY 3 OF 5

Get Real

Getting real isn’t always pretty, so we have to ask: Where does our true loyalty lie? Is it with the truth — the honest, sometimes not-so-pretty truth — or a sugar-coated version of reality?

If you’ve spent much time on this planet, you probably aren’t a stranger to pain. It tends to hit us all in different ways at different times, but it’s pain just the same.

Pain isn’t fun, but it can serve a purpose in our lives and the lives of others if we’ll allow God to redeem it. Take King David, for example. In his lowest moments he cried out to God and honestly expressed the darkness he was experiencing. But then David reminded himself of the hope that’s in the Lord — the refuge we can experience with God’s arms around us.

One principle we can certainly observe from David's life is that sincerity is the goal when it comes to communicating with God, not perfection. Don't wait until you think you have the "right" words; be transparent with the One who created you — the One who knows you most and loves you anyway.

Just as we must be honest with the Lord, we must first be honest with ourselves. You must “... embark on your own journey, ask yourself this bottom-line question: What’s holding you back from becoming the revolutionary you were born to be? What needs to happen in your life for you to establish new priorities and shape new disciplines?”

Remember: “The true enemies of progress are doubt, apathy, and blame. They must be conquered in your mind (that is the first battleground) before you can become the revolutionary you were born to be.”

So, dig in. Get honest with yourself and God, even when it hurts. You won't regret it.

About this Plan

Disruptive Compassion

Sometimes we see injustice in the world and think, “There’s nothing I can do about it.” But that’s where we’re wrong. Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus set forth a model for revolutionaries that is just as powerful to guide our journey today. This plan is your playbook for moving beyond helplessness and becoming the change you want to see in the world. Will you join the revolution?
