Seven Simple Words
Peter was a pro; he knew what to do, and he had done it. But though he had fished all night, he hadn’t caught a thing. He was exhausted. Empty-handed. Embarrassed. But just as Peter was rolling up his nets and giving up, Jesus came along and said, “Launch out into the deep water.”
Can you picture Peter rolling his eyes?
“Go deeper!” Jesus challenged. Jesus believed in Peter and had big plans for him. However, Peter had to think beyond what he, in his strength, could do. He needed to see and know what only God and His power working within him could do.
Have you ever been to a sporting event where the fans called to struggling players: “Dig deep!” What did that mean? What does Christ mean when He tells you to go deeper? He is talking about resolve—not giving up even when all seems lost. He is talking about focus, not on how people are reacting but rather on what God is asking. He is urging you to go beyond your feelings, your talents, and your resources to stand on what you know God has promised, and what only His power at work in you can do. He is talking about looking beyond the obvious to see things yet to be seen—that God is working and, at just the right moment, your obedience will be rewarded “infinitely more” than you could have imagined.
Peter might have rolled his eyes at Jesus’ instructions, but his words revealed his willing heart: “But because you say so, I will” (Luke 5:5). Seven simple words.
Is God urging you to go deeper in some area of your life? Describe what you hear Him asking of you. Then, if you are ready to do so, write a prayer to God that echoes Peter’s seven simple words. They changed his life. They will change yours as well.
