Being Changed By Prayer
In his book, Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God, Dr. Timothy Keller says that “prayer is both conversation and encounter with God... we must know awe of praising his glory, the intimacy of finding his grace, and the struggle of asking his help, all of which can lead us to know the spiritual reality of his presence”(5).
From this definition we can see that prayer is more than simple conversation. Prayer changes us. Through praising Him, seeking His guidance, and trusting in His ways, we begin to experience real intimacy with Him, and our wills start to align with His.
Scripture makes this reality clear to us through Moses. In Exodus, Moses wants to see the glory of God, so he asks God to fully reveal himself. However, God knows that Moses, as a flawed human, cannot handle the fullness of God’s presence. He places Moses in the cleft of a mountain to protect him as God walked by. Moses did not get exactly what he asked for. He saw only a glimpse of God’s fullness when he wanted to see all of God, and although this was not exactly what Moses wanted, Moses trusted that God’s way was better.
As you read these passages today, think about how God brings His people into His perfect will and pray that He leads you where He desires.
