You Were Fashioned To Spread the Gospel
How much light does it take to dispel darkness? Even one tiny spark is enough. Have you ever been in a cave when the tour guide turned out the lights? The darkness almost feels tangible. The single strike of a match can illuminate a person’s entire face. A little light goes a long way, and a lot of light goes a really long way. Satellite photos taken of the earth from outer space reveal globs of light where cities are located.
The Bible talks about us as lights shining in the world. The examples cited are a city and a lamp. One is large and the other small, but both are important in their respective environments. You may not feel like a very important person. You may feel you have limited influence, but remember that spark in a cave and know that your life matters.
How do we shine in such a way as to help spread the gospel? Try writing the word gospel in your journal as an acrostic and think of a tangible way to tell someone about Jesus that begins with each letter. For “G” you might write, “Greet others with the phrase ‘Good morning, may the Lord bless you!’” “O” might read, “Organize a plan to take homemade cookies or bread to my neighbors and tell them Jesus loves them, and I love them too.” Be creative with your ideas and keep them practical. You might be surprised by how much fun you’ll have sharing the gospel and becoming a light in your world.
Do your clothes convey an air of excitement and creativity? Do you dress in such a way that others comment on your choices? Do they notice, or do you blend in with all the other black monotone outfits in the room? While some workplaces allow more personal choice in clothing than, say, the medical profession, it is still possible to add a tiny statement. Try a great necklace or pair of earrings. Even a statement ring can make a big difference. Maybe the only options you have lie in what you don’t carry around all day, like your purse. To whatever degree is appropriate in your workplace, try to wear or carry at least one conversation-starter piece.
Once a person comments on something you’re wearing, the door is open to keep talking. Then you can respond with something like, “Thank you! This piece reminds me of God, who fashioned me in his image and who loves me. You know, he loves you too!” Even if this is the only statement you make about God, it will be a spark the other person will notice and continue to think about.
