Jehovah Nissi

DAY 3 OF 3

Our dependence on God as our Banner of Victory is in truth a dependence on all that Christ has accomplished for us in His death on the cross.

In fact, the Gospel of John compared the cross to another banner that Moses lifted up for Israel in the wilderness. In Numbers 21, poisonous snakes tormented Israel, and Moses was instructed to construct a bronze serpent to be raised up as a standard. Whoever gazed upon the bronze serpent was healed of his wounds. Jesus similarly notes,

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life” (John 3:14-15).

Christ’s death on the cross is thus God’s paradoxical emblem or banner of victory over our ultimate enemies of sin and death. As we learn, in the midst of our battles, to trust in God’s victory accomplished in the death of his Son and as we become deeply connected to the church as a community that demonstrates Christ’s love through mutual support, we will realize, like Moses and the Israelites, that God is our banner of victory. In so doing, we will learn to call him Jehovah Nissi.

Are you plugged into a community of faith that can support you on your journey of life? Do you have brothers or sisters (like Aaron and Hur) in the faith who can come alongside you and help to “bear your burden”?

Pride often gets in the way of allowing others to bear our burdens, and our unwillingness to allow others to “know our business” isolates us from the support the body of Christ can offer. Be sure to reach out and join a community of believers in order to discover the power of unity under God's overarching banner.
