Rest For The Weary

DAY 3 OF 3

How do we learn to submit to the easy yoke of Jesus as our Master?

The third imperative that Jesus gave in this passage was:

“Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29).

We enter Jesus’s school of the easy yoke and light burden by living life as He lived it. As we study His life in Scripture and respond in prayerful obedience, we will learn to follow His command:

“If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it” (Matthew 16:24-25).

In short, we learn from Jesus by committing to become His disciples. We sit at His feet learning to copy His way of life until it becomes our very own.

I don’t want you to think that coming to Jesus, taking up His yoke, and learning from Him means that we will be magically relieved of our burdens and afflictions. It does mean, however, that the burden will seem lighter as we find that we are yoked to the One who was strong enough to carry the weight of all of our sins on the cross.

Have you committed yourself to become a disciple of Jesus—not just someone who has received His offer of salvation, but someone who actively seeks to copy His way of living in your own life?
