40acts: Do Lent Generously

DAY 21 OF 47

Value

The fact you are reading this proves that schools are amazing places of learning! Have you ever stopped to think about how much schools do for our communities? They’re not just places where kids learn maths and science; they’re where lifelong friendships are formed, dreams take root, and values are nurtured. And at the heart of it all are teachers – dedicated, hard-working, and often underappreciated. Let’s take a moment to reflect on how we can make their lives a little brighter this Lent.

Think back to your school days. Maybe there was a teacher who believed in you when no one else did or who sparked your interest in something that shaped your future. Teachers don’t just teach; they inspire, mentor, and care deeply for their students. Supporting schools means investing in the next generation – helping kids grow into thoughtful, capable, and compassionate adults.

Lent is all about reflecting on Christ’s love and finding ways to share it with others. Schools are such a big part of our communities, yet they’re often stretched thin – teachers overwhelmed, resources limited, and students facing challenges. What better time than Lent to show them some love and support?

Having recently left teaching after 21 years, I can still remember when the school chaplaincy team gifted each member of staff with a coaster (Bible verse printed over a photo of a local scene) and a bar of chocolate. Afterward, some non-Christian staff talked to me about how touched they were by the kindness shown. From personal experience, I also loved hearing about how my ex-pupils were doing in life after school and the small part played in their future career choices.

Let’s use this Lenten season to do something meaningful for our local schools. By reaching out, we’re not just helping teachers and students – we’re living out Christ’s call to love our neighbours. Together, we can make a real impact and show the world what His love looks like in action.

Prayer:

Pray for schools, their staff, and students, that they may flourish as places of learning, growth, and community. Lift teachers, asking God to strengthen and encourage them in their vital work, especially during challenging times. Pray for opportunities to bless and support your local school, showing Christ’s love in practical ways. Finally, give thanks to the teachers who have inspired you, and ask God to help you reflect His care and compassion to the next generation.

Take a 40acts challenge today:

  1. Whether you have a child in school or not, send a card to your local school thanking the staff for educating and supporting local children.
  2. Take a box of biscuits to a local school and hand it in at reception for the staff to share – including a Bible verse, or a message of thankfulness for all that they do.
  3. Create/buy a framed print that expresses a message of gratitude. When you deliver it to a local school, suggest that they hang it on a wall in the staff room.

About this Plan

40acts: Do Lent Generously

What if Lent was about more than just giving stuff up? This Bible plan is an adaptation of the full 40acts challenge. Our hope is that as you explore and practice biblical generosity in all areas of your life, you would experience its transformational impact. Each day contains a prompt for one act of generosity on that day's topic, with Sunday reflections summarising the theme of the acts that week.
