Luke is most likely writing to a primarily Greek audience. Luke will show us the birth story from the point of Mary. The Greek heroes all had wonderful backstories of how they were born, and the mother often mattered more than the father as the father was almost always a god and the mother a human. The Greeks cared very much about the mother's story because it humanized the hero. Jesus is both God and man, and Luke takes special time to tell not only Mary's story, but Elizabeth's story as well. There are many heroes in this family!
