Measuring the Heavenly City
Thoughts on the Passage
Yesterday we saw that the city was closely associated with the people of God – gates were the tribes of Israel, the foundations were the 12 apostles. Today we see the physical layout of the city – it is impressive.
It is about 2000 km wide, 2000 km long and 2000 km high. The physical area of the city is about the size of India and Pakistan combined or about half the size of the USA. However, if the city was made up of 2000 levels – each 1 km (1000m) high, that would make the total useable area of the city at 8,000,000,000 km2. The total surface area of this earth is 2,100,000,000 km2. That means that the city would be four times the area of the whole earth (land and sea). That is just the city. It does not include the new earth that the city dwells on.
Now remember that the streets of this city are pure gold. The foundations of the city are beautiful gemstones. The gates massive pearls. The walls are massive. It is going to be an amazing home.
Finally, we see something special about this city. Look at the numbers again.
City dimensions – 12*1000 stadia (that is a measure that they used for distance).
Walls – 12*12 cubits thick.
12 foundations.
12 gates of pearl.
The number 12 again represents completeness. The number 1000 represents completeness.
It is a completely perfect city. There will be no slums. There will be no industrial sector with pollution. It will be a perfect place to spend eternity. Jesus said in the parable in Luke 14 – “My house must be full”. That is going to be an amazing sight.
Prayer
Father, sometimes we think that You will make our eternal home a small city – because we think of cities constrained by the resources needed to help them function – water, power, transportation, etc. Somehow, we do not really grasp how massive and beautiful this city will be. I cannot imagine how amazing it will be. When I see this and Your promise that “my house must be full”, I think that we underestimate the size of Your Church. So help us to not worry about the challenges we face. Let us have Your heart to fill Your house. In Jesus Name, Amen.

About this Plan
Many of us have thought about what our heavenly home will be like. In Plan 13 of Revelation, we read the description of heaven and start painting all these wonderful pictures in our minds. But we will never come close to picturing what God our Father has in store for us. So let us take heed of Jesus final message in Revelation and make sure we don’t miss out on what God is preparing for us.
