“How Great is Our God” Devotion
Passion feat. Chris Tomlin
“Age to age He stands
And time is in His hands
Beginning and the end
Beginning and the end
The Godhead Three in One
Father, Spirit and Son
Lion and the Lamb
Lion and the Lamb”
Have you ever truly considered the greatness of creation? What about the greatness of God? Have you ever taken a long drive out into the country, far away from the glow of the city, to find yourself surrounded in empty, open space? Away from every point of connection, have you ever looked up at the expanse of the heavens and found yourself captured by the beauty of life beyond your own? Of how little our own lives feel when presented with such a grand stage of the unexplored before us?
It’s a humbling experience to consider something so great. It’s the same feeling when we meet someone famous or when we observe a work of great architecture. The greatness of an object or person repositions our view of ourselves even as we look at something else. Certainly the same can be said of the greatness of God. Scripture speaks to the subject to create a sense of wonder and awe in us. But there’s much more to that greatness that’s also explored by the scriptures.
Genesis 1:1 grandly states that “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” but let us not forget in Psalm 139:13. There David acknowledges, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
Part of what makes God great is that he is just as much a God of the entire universe as He is the God who has known you intimately from before there was time. He is also faithful (I Cor. 1:9), eternal (Deut. 33:27), holy (Isa. 5:16), and any number of other descriptors we can come up with using our feeble vocabulary. And yet He is infinitely more than any of these characterizations.
The God who has been worshipped around the world for thousands of years is the same God we worship today. Omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, there is no one like Him in the universe. The same God who knows what the future holds in store for the nations and keeps the earth from spinning off its axis and sending us to oblivion, is also the same God who knows the number of hairs on our heads (Luke 12:7) and is always by our side (Hebrews 13:5b).
Truly He is great and greatly to be praised.
