Introduction

Today we begin reading excerpts from the book of Judges, a book that contains stories from the lawless period in Israel’s history between the occupation of Canaan and the establishment of the monarchy. These stories are about the exploits of national heroes called “judges,” most of whom were military leaders. Israel’s survival depended on loyalty to God; but even when the nation was disloyal to God and disaster came, God was always ready to save the people when they repented and turned to him again. In today’s reading, an angel of the LORD issues a warning because the Israelites have disobeyed the LORD. The people of Israel sin against the LORD by worshiping other gods. God raises up leaders to save the people from their enemies, but the people return to their sinful ways after each leader dies. Today’s reading also recounts the death of Joshua.

[The angel of the LORD said]: “I will never break my covenant with you. You must not make any covenant with the people who live in this land.”

Reflect

What was the angel’s message to the Israelites? What promise had God made to Israel? What were the people to promise in return? Why had Joshua been such an important leader for Israel? According to verse 10, what had the people forgotten? According to verse 16, what was the role of Israel’s leaders (judges)? Reread verses 17-19. What pattern of behavior is described here? What were the consequences when Israel stopped worshiping the LORD?

Lord God, you are faithful to your covenant. Keep me close to you and obedient to your will. When I fail to obey you, call me back to you and help me to serve you faithfully. In your holy name I pray. Amen.
