Jesus the True Vine
1“I am the true vine, # Isa 5:1–7; 1Co 3:9 and My Father is the vinedresser. 2Every branch in Me that bears no fruit, He takes away. # Mt 3:10; 13:12 And every branch that bears fruit, He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3You are already clean through the word which I have spoken to you. # Jn 13:10; 17:17 4Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. # Jn 6:56; Gal 2:20; 1Jn 2:6 As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, neither can you, unless you remain in Me.
5“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who remains in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit. # Jn 15:16 For without Me you can do nothing. # Php 4:13 6If a man does not remain in Me, he is thrown out as a branch and withers. And they gather them # Mt 13:41; Jn 15:2 and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it shall be done for you. # Jn 14:13; 15:16 8My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit; # Mt 5:16 so you will be My disciples. # Jn 8:31
9“As the Father loved Me, I also loved you. # Jn 17:26 Remain in My love. 10If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love, # Jn 14:15 even as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love. # Jn 8:29; 17:4 11I have spoken these things to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. # Jn 16:24; 17:13 12This is My commandment: that you love one another, as I have loved you. # Jn 13:34; 1Jn 3:23 13Greater love has no man than this: that a man lay down his life for his friends. # Jn 10:11, 15 14You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. # Mt 12:50; Lk 12:4 15I no longer call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master does. # Jn 15:20 But I have called you friends, for everything that I have heard from My Father have I made known to you. # Jn 8:26 16You did not choose Me, but I chose you, # Jn 6:70; 13:18 and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that the Father may give you whatever you ask Him in My name. 17This I command you: that you love one another. # Jn 15:12
The World’s Hatred of Jesus
18“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. # Jn 7:7; 1Jn 3:13 19If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, # Jn 15:16 the world therefore hates you. 20Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ # Mt 10:24; Jn 13:16 If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My words, they will keep yours also. 21But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, # Mt 10:22 because they do not know Him who sent Me. # Jn 16:3 22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. # Jn 9:41; Ro 1:20 23He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, # Jn 5:36; 10:37 they would have no sin. But now have they seen and hated both My Father and Me. 25But that the word which is written in their law might be fulfilled, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’ # Ps 35:19; 69:4 # 15:25 Ps 35:19; 69:4.
26“But when the Advocate comes, # Jn 14:16–17, 26; 16:7 whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness of Me. 27And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. # Lk 24:48; Jn 21:24
