Jesus Anointed at Bethany
Mt 26:6–13; Mk 14:3–9
1Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, # Mt 21:17 where Lazarus was, who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. 2They prepared a supper for Him there. # Lk 10:38–42 Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. 3Then Mary took a pint # 12:3 Gk a litra, or half a liter. of very costly ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. # Jn 11:2 The house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.
4But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, 5“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii # 12:5 About a year’s wages. and given to the poor?” 6He said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief. And having the money box, # Jn 13:29 he used to steal what was put in it.
7But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She has kept this for the day of My burial. 8For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.” # Dt 15:11; Mt 26:11
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9When many of the Jews learned that He was there, they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. 10So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also, # Lk 16:31 11because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus. # Jn 11:45; 12:18
The Triumphant Entry
Mt 21:1–11; Mk 11:1–11; Lk 19:28–40
12On the next day a great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13They took branches of palm trees, and went out to meet Him, and cried out:
“Hosanna!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ # Ps 118:25–26 # 12:13 Ps 118:25–26.
The King of Israel!” # Jn 1:49
14Then Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it. As it is written:
15“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your King is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s # Zec 9:9 # 12:15 Zec 9:9. colt.”
16His disciples did not understand these things at first. But when Jesus was glorified, # Jn 7:39 they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. # Jn 2:17, 22
17Now the crowd that was with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. 18The crowd went and met Him for this reason: They heard that He had performed this sign. # Jn 12:11 19So the Pharisees said among themselves, “See, you are gaining nothing! Look, the world has followed Him!” # Jn 3:26
The Greeks Who Seek Jesus
20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast. # 1Ki 8:41–43; Jn 7:35 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” 22Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
23Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. # Jn 13:31–32 24Truly, truly I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25He who loves his life will lose it. And he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. # Mt 10:39; Lk 14:26 26If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me. Where I am, there will My servant be also. # Jn 14:3; 17:24 If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.
Jesus Foretells His Death
27“Now My soul is troubled. # Jn 13:21 What shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? Instead, for this reason I came to this hour. # Lk 22:53 28Father, glorify Your name.”
Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” # Mt 3:17; 17:5 29The crowd that stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
30Jesus answered, “This voice came not for My sake, but for your sakes. # Jn 11:42 31Now judgment is upon this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out. # Jn 14:30; 2Co 4:4; Eph 6:12 32And if I be lifted up from the earth, # Jn 3:14; 8:28 I will draw all men to Myself.” # Jn 6:44 33He said this to signify by what kind of death He would die. # Jn 18:32; 21:19
34The crowd answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever. # Ps 89:35–37; Isa 9:7 Why do You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”
35Then Jesus said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, # Eph 5:8 lest darkness overtake you. He who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. # Jn 12:46 36While you have light, believe in the light that you may become sons of light.” # Lk 16:8 Jesus said these things, and departed and hid Himself from them. # Jn 8:59
The Unbelief of the Jews
37Though He had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in Him. 38This fulfilled the word spoken by Isaiah the prophet:
“Lord, who has believed our report,
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” # Isa 53:1; Ro 10:16 # 12:38 Isa 53:1.
39Therefore they could not believe. # Jn 5:44 For Isaiah said again:
40“He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
lest they should see with their eyes
and perceive with their hearts and turn,
and I would heal them.” # Isa 6:10; Mt 13:13–15 # 12:40 Isa 6:10.
41Isaiah said this when he saw His glory and spoke of Him. # Isa 6:1–5
42Yet many of the rulers also believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they be put out of the synagogue. # Jn 7:13; 9:22 43For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. # Jn 5:41, 44
Judgment by Jesus’ Word
44Jesus cried out, “He who believes in Me believes not only in Me, but in Him who sent Me. # Mt 10:40; Jn 5:24 45He who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not remain in darkness. # Jn 3:19; 8:12
47“If anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. # Jn 3:17 48He who rejects Me, # Lk 10:16 and does not receive My words, has that which judges him. The word I have spoken will judge him on the last day. # Ro 2:16 49For I have not spoken on My own authority, but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. # Jn 3:11; 5:30 50I know that His command is eternal life. # Jn 6:68 Therefore what I say, I say as the Father tells me.”
