God Sees

Bryan Dench

Ready:

“The wicked think, ‘God isn’t watching us! He has closed his eyes and won’t even see what we do!’” Psalm 10:11

Set:

Athletes compete hard in events that reward success. If we want to be pleasing to God, we must compete with integrity. The Christian athlete should be the hardest worker, the strongest fighter, and the most loving and obedient member of the team. The Christian coach should model honesty. We perform to an audience of one, and God sees all that we do.

A Christian ice hockey player in a close championship game seemed to score the tying goal. He knew, though, that he had unintentionally kicked the puck into the goal. While the crowd hollered and the referees conferred, he went to them to say it should not be a goal because his foot kicked the puck. They disallowed the goal. The player’s team ended up losing the game. The referees were amazed at his integrity. The entire crowd, from both sides, saw this example of honesty. They knew where he was coming from because his team jersey had the cross of Christ on it. The player could have said nothing and been credited with a key goal. It was a powerful witness.

Go:

1. Have you ever had the chance to gain by cheating? What did you do?

2. If you are 100% committed to God, what should you do the next time?

Workout:

  • 1 Samuel 2:30
  • Colossians 3:23-25
  • Proverbs 11:3

Overtime:

“Oh, Lord, make me stronger to follow You and to do what is right and pleasing in your sight, even if it hurts and even if I could get away with doing something You would not approve of.”
