Shoplifter or Stock Boy?
Rex Stump
Ready:
“So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Set:
A shoplifter takes from the shelf and steals what belongs to the owner. A stock boy fills the shelf, giving honor to the owner. What if I told you that we are all shoplifters or stock boys?
When I say discouraging things or show discouragement to others, I am robbing or shoplifting them of courage. However, when we encourage others and say encouraging things, we are stock boys filling up the shelves of others with courage.
During an FCA Team Time, I had players attempt to stand Jenga blocks vertically on end, in the grass. The task was accomplished, but it became almost impossible when I asked them to stack a second block on top of the first. I finally asked them to stand four blocks vertically. It couldn’t be done. Working as a team, they placed the blocks together, building a solid foundation. Then they stood the blocks together to reach their goal of four blocks tall. It’s easier to stand tall when we are on a firm foundation and standing together.
Every day we face challenges and storms that cast doubt, fear, and worry our direction. I can be discouraging or encouraging. Steal courage or give courage. As a follower of Jesus Christ, I must remember the Lord is my ROCK and foundation. His foundation allows me to build up others using encouraging words and the love of our Lord.
Go:
1. Are you a shoplifter, takings courage from others or are you a stock boy, giving courage to those in need?
2. What can I do to become more positive and encouraging with my words?
Workout:
- 1 Corinthians 16:13-14
- Deuteronomy 31:6
- 2 Chronicles 20:17
Overtime:
“Heavenly Father, help me to use words that are encouraging to my friends. Forgive me for taking away courage from others by the use of my negative talk. Thank You for helping me build up others! Amen.”
