God’s Love Letter

One year for Christmas, three different people gave me three different books. These would have been perfectly good gifts except for one problem . . . I was knee-deep in seminary, plowing through church history, epistemology, metaphysics, and this massive systematic theology textbook. The last thing I wanted to do was to read something else. Even reading God’s Word became a chore.

Some of us love reading and even take books along on vacation. Others hate it, and God giving us His Word in a thousand-page book can seem like a cruel trick. But even people who hate reading will usually read the card accompanying a birthday or Christmas gift. And when we know the giver well, we can almost hear their voice speaking directly to us.

God wanted to make sure that His Word was personal and relatable, so His “Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

Jesus is the gift, and the Bible is God’s love letter.

When we read it, we start to understand the depths of His love for us. We learn what God is like, what He cares about, and what He requires of us.

If we are to grow in our faith, we must do our best to read His Word daily or have it read to us. Either way, the more we get to know Him, the more we learn to appreciate His gift.

How much time can you commit to reading God’s Word each day?

If you were to pick a verse to memorize from today’s reading, which would it be? Try reading that verse several times each day until you know it by heart.
