Choose Him
Hebrews 11:26 “Moses regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.” (emphasis added).
The third life-shaping choice Moses made was he chose what God values over what culture values. Moses valued, regarded, and chose what God values over what Egypt valued. He chose God’s values over the treasures of Egypt. Moses had the life most people pray for: living in the palace, riding the best carriages, you name it. But Moses, driven by his values, abandoned all that and chose what God values, over what culture values.
Moses was driven by his values. I want to challenge you to write down your top three (3) values in life. Pause and think, what are your top three values in life? If you are blank, that is not a very good place to be. The truth is if you do not have your own values that are in line with God’s values, your choices will not be sound or consistent, and your choices will not lead to the future that you want. I pray that your values will be realigned with God’s values for you in the Name of Jesus.
The world has its own values. Hebrews 11:24: “It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.” Moses refused popularity, prestige, and power — he refused the pride of life. Hebrews 11:25: “He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin.” That is the lust of the flesh. Hebrews 11:26: “He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward.” That is the lust of the eyes. The world values the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. These are the same things satan used to tempt Eve and he still uses them today. The values of the world really do not change and that is all the world has to offer. God says to us in 1 John 2:17: “The world and everything in it that people desire is passing away; but those who do the will of God live forever.” (TEV).
God is saying that when you do the things that the world values, you expire. But when you do the things that God values, you endure. So, what does God value?
#1. Purpose over Popularity (Hebrews 11:24). How much more popular can you get? God values His purposes in Moses’ life above the popularity that Egypt offers. This world values popularity but God values purpose over popularity.
#2. People over Pleasure. God always values people over pleasure. People are more important to God than pleasure (Hebrews 11:25).
#3. A Place in Christ over Possessions (Hebrews 11:26). Look ahead and keep your eyes on Christ. Moses gave up the things you can lose for the things you cannot lose; Moses gave up the things that are temporal for the things that are eternal.
Moses gave up popularity for purpose, pleasure for people, and possessions for a place in Christ. Moses chose what God values over what culture values.
Prayer: Father, by Your Spirit, align my values with Your values, in Jesus' mighty Name. Amen!
