Come to the Table

1 Corinthians 11: 23, For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Every Sabbath the Jews gathered as families and celebrated a meal together remembering the Passover. Passover was the event where the Israelites were set free from slavery, and they left Egypt. On the night of that meal, they had to mark their doorposts with blood so that the angel of death would pass them by.

This weekly practice was converted in the hands of Jesus.

This meal, which was a regular reminder of how they were saved and set free from slavery, was a foreshadow of how the true, pure, Lamb of God would be slain once and for all for the sins of the world. This prophetic picture from thousands of years ago was about to be fulfilled; Jesus - setting us free from Satan’s clutches.

The night Jesus broke bread and shared wine with His disciples He told them that this is a picture of His body and blood. He was going to be the sacrificial Lamb once and for all.

And that is not all. We are henceforth to celebrate the Passover meal in remembrance of His death and resurrection – the central point of our faith, and we are to commemorate it until He comes again.

The Passover was celebrated by the Jews. The Passover which we call the Lord’s Table is being celebrated by Christ's followers today, and then one day in eternity we will celebrate at another table – the Banquet at the marriage supper of the bridegroom – the Lamb of God.

Let us remember, give thanks, and celebrate.
