Trials, Commendation, and Challenge – a vision of the Church
Reflect
How do you respond under stress? Some of us withdraw and become introspective. We bury our heads in the sand in the hope it will all pass. Others of us react fiercely, hurting others along the way.
Remembering the context of Revelation gives weight to the words. John isn’t making this stuff up. Every vision and scene he sees he notes to strengthen and encourage. Revelation isn’t a book primarily concerned about the future. It's far more about giving us help for the present.
The churches addressed in chapter 3 are all, in their own ways, acting up. The pressure and the stress have got to them. Sardis is faking it and Philadelphia is about to throw in the towel while Laodicea has settled for apathy. Sound familiar?
What does Jesus’ response to the churches teach us?
Jesus brings a fresh perspective. He knows that to change, we sometimes need to be challenged. A good coach makes demands on their team, the kind teacher holds their students to account and a loving parent doesn’t let ignorance go unpunished. Jesus holds the churches, and us, accountable too.
Sardis needs to know that reputation alone is not enough. But those who have not soiled their clothes (who have lived with purity and integrity) will walk in victory (verse 4).
Philadelphia is nearly out, but Jesus shouts from the sidelines that they should hold on because there’s always hope (verses 11–12). If you don't give up, Jesus will make you a pillar in his temple.
Laodicea faces a real challenge from Jesus. He says it’s better to be hot or cold towards him than to be in the middle. But because he loves them, he stands at the door and knocks (verse 20); he wants to eat a meal with them. Jesus longs for relationship and closeness with his people.
Respond
What words do you need to hear today?
Are you faking it, are you tempted to give up or are you indifferent towards Jesus? Make space to be real with Jesus in this moment. Then ask him to fill you with His presence and love.
