Overcoming The Monster Of Grief

Your Loss is Real

It’s okay to ask, “Why?” Sometimes, even the most seasoned Christian struggles with doubts and questions. Thomas did, before He saw the resurrected Jesus. The truth is, God doesn’t think like us. He sees the big picture and works toward a specific end. When you find yourself doubting and questioning God, pray, “Lord, believing isn’t easy when I’m hurt and confused, and You are silent. Like Thomas, I want proof that you love me. Help me see beyond my desire for peace and comfort, beyond my doubts and unanswered questions, and grasp the truth of your unfailing love and grace.”

Get real with God. Under stress, the surge of negative emotions can be overwhelming; unless you unburden your soul before God, you’ll explode at the wrong people.

The Psalmist addresses this, saying, “Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us” (Psalm 62:8). It’s no mere coincidence that many of the Psalms start out with the psalmist crying out to God for help, and end with him rejoicing because he vented his pent-up frustrations.

Lastly, when you’re alone too much, you lose perspective. If the enemy can isolate you, he can influence you. Be sure to surround yourself with people who will ask the tough questions, and simply be there to listen with no strings attached. These people will ground you, and give you some perspective, when the pain seems too much to bear.
