The Book of Life

When I was in high school, our history teacher organized a school outing to the cinema. We were all very excited about skipping another regular day at school. I remember that my excitement lasted for about 10 minutes. After being confronted with World War II, I found myself crying not only for the rest of the film but also a couple of hours after it ended.

The film was Schindler’s List. Oskar Schindler was a German industrialist and a member of the Nazi Party who is credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his enamelware and ammunitions factories. The names of those 1,200 mortal Jewish souls were saved because they were on his list.

Can you imagine being spared from death for being on someone’s list? The list we will refer to does not contain the names of those who belong to a VIP club, an exclusive university, or a certain church or denomination. It is more than a list, it is a book that has the names of the ones who will enter heaven written in it, the book of life. In Revelation 21:27, the apostle John writes, “Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

The book is not called “the good works book,” or “the I am a nice person book–I have never killed anybody.” It is called the Lamb’s book of life because the merit of being included in it only belongs to Jesus. When John the Baptist (a prophet) saw Jesus walking towards him, he said, “…Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) The only reason why we will have total access to eternal life is because of Jesus’ love for us (Romans 5:8).

His sacrifice at the cross was made once and took away the sins of many (Hebrews 9:28). You cannot write your own name in the book of the Lamb, and your name will not be written because of your good behavior, works, or intentions (Ephesians 2:8–9). We have eternal life because Jesus’ blood paid the full price of our redemption from eternal death. We have been saved from eternal doom because of God’s grace and love. It is a gift. You cannot earn it, you can only receive it.

I pray that this plan may allow you to have an eternal perspective of life so that your goals, plans, and purpose will be aligned with God’s eternal plans and promises.

Thought of the Day
