Doing All for God's Glory
‘Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.’
(Colossians 3:23-24 NLT)
We mentioned on day one of this devotional that you may be in a role or position of work at the moment where you don’t feel particularly called. But it pays the bills.
If this is you, then I believe that today’s devotional will speak to you powerfully.
If you are blessed enough to be in a position of work where you are thriving and you feel deeply called to the task at hand, this is also for you, although you may not need the encouragement as much as our friends who are in roles that inspire them a little less right now.
As today’s title verse encourages us, we are called to work willingly at what we put our hands to. This does not equal showing up late, in a foul mood, and skirting by doing the bare minimum all day.
If you are not particularly energised by what you do currently for work, may I encourage you to ask God the following question every day before you show up to your job:
‘Lord, what are you teaching me through my work today?’
This may seem a little much, to expect God to teach you something every day through your career, but I assure you, He can!
God does not waste anything and will use even the toughest of seasons and experiences in our lives to graft solid character into His children.
I remember the 2 jobs that have taught me the most in my career so far. They both taught me patience and tenacity.
In one role I was a Nursery Assistant. I was given the responsibility of caring for 3 under 2’s, documenting their development and daily movements and generally making sure that their parents were abreast of all that their precious child had done that day.
I did this for 2 years. 2 of the most exhausting years of my life so far!
Now, I may not have felt called particularly to being a Nursery Assistant or developing into becoming a Nursery Nurse, but God used that season of my life to teach me so much patience! All the parents reading this can attest I’m sure to the level of patience that is required when looking after and caring for a little one!
Secondly, I worked as a Receptionist in London. The commute, teamed with the hustle and bustle of the big city wore me out completely! I managed to do my job but was definitely finished by the end of the day and not up for much else after my day's work.
This season of work taught me tenacity. Repeating an exhausting pattern over and over is tough – but God can and will use it for our good.
Both patience and tenacity have stood me in good stead over the years so my encouragement to you today is to work willingly at whatever you find yourself doing right now, it will be worth it in the end.

About this Plan

Work is part of God’s greater purpose for our lives. Scripture calls us to work with excellence, as if for the Lord, not man. But what if we saw work as worship? How would that change our mindset and actions? In this 5-day 'Work as Worship' devotional, we explore these questions to inspire and motivate you in your daily work.
