A Great Harvest

DAY 5 OF 8

Compassion for the Harassed and Helpless

Have you ever felt forgotten, overwhelmed, or directionless? Jesus noticed those who were harassed and helpless, and He still does today.

In Matthew 9:36, Jesus looks at the crowds and is moved with compassion. He sees their true state—like sheep without a shepherd. Without a shepherd, sheep are vulnerable to predators and unable to find nourishment or safety on their own. Similarly, people without God are left defenseless and directionless in a chaotic world.

Jesus’ response to the crowd wasn’t frustration or indifference; it was compassion. His heart broke for their needs, and His love compelled Him to act. As followers of Jesus, we are called to reflect this same compassion. It’s not enough to simply notice others’ struggles; we must let our love move us to action—praying, serving, and sharing the hope of the gospel.

Take a moment today to reflect on the needs of those around you. How can you show the compassion of Christ to someone who feels harassed and helpless?
