Living Water
The context of this verse is paramount to its meaning, and it’s interesting to think how one would react, being a ‘festival-goer’ in a similar situation. Its setting is “the last and greatest day of the festival.” A celebration is winding to a close after days of lavish eating and drinking, and a man rises and asks… Who is thirsty? Now, that’s radical! But Jesus wasn’t speaking to physical thirst, surely everyone was fully satisfied with food and drink; He was speaking to spiritual hunger and foreseeing an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. There is a difference between hunger and spiritual hunger, hunger that can be sensually measured and hunger measured in the heart. Water in the natural quenches tangible thirst while living water from the Messiah Jesus quenches that innate and intangible thirst unique to every person. Quest and hunger for more of His Holy Spirit today, and cultivate the living water which flows from within you.
I echo the prayer of missionary Heidi Baker in proclaiming today that whatever your situation or scenario, you would be left fully and completely satisfied … and ravenously hungry for more! In Jesus’ name.
Prayer: Father, give us hunger for more of your Holy Spirit; I pray that our hearts would overflow with your living water.
