Let There Be Light

DAY 21 OF 21

Day 21 – Tim Sefton
(Calvary Emerald)

John Chapter 21
Title: Failure Need Not Be Final

Scripture: John 21:17
A third time He asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.”

Thought:
Like all of us, the apostle Peter experienced failure. During the Last Supper, Peter boldly professed that he would never desert Jesus (Mark 14:29). However, only hours later, three times, Peter vehemently denied knowing Him. Ashamed of his failure, Peter ran from Jesus “crying bitterly” (Luke 22:62). In the face of disappointment, how did Peter recover and become a great witness for Christ and a prominent leader in the early church?

Because of Jesus!

In this beach scene, Jesus leads Peter through a process of restoration. Guilt had consumed Peter. However, Jesus didn’t write Peter off but provided him with a do-over. In response to Christ’s forgiveness, Peter repents from his three shameful betrayals with three earnest proclamations of his love for Jesus. Jesus fully restored Peter and entrusted the leadership of the church to him. It's Jesus’ call for Peter to “Follow me” again (John 21:19) that defines Peter’s future and not the crow of the Rooster.

Application:
Only Jesus has the power to restore us. If you are grappling with failure and disappointment, take courage—Jesus wants to rejuvenate you. Do you need "breakfast on the beach" with Jesus? Don't let failure hold you back. In Christ, a failed Christian isn’t a finished Christian! Step out in faith today. Return to Jesus, declare your love for Him once more, and recommit to following Him. Your future awaits!

Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, I love you. I say no to failure. Please renew my enthusiasm for you. Amen
