In Security – Ems Hancock

DAY 2 OF 10

Dealing With The Roots of Insecurity

Years ago we were woken in the middle of the night by our faulty burglar alarm. It was loud enough to wake the entire village! I can still remember the sight of all of our bleary-eyed children on the stairs asking what was the matter and why the “big bell” was ringing.

My husband rang the faded number on the keypad. A tired and apathetic voice answered. The man on the phone was not at all sure what we should do. “I’m new to the alarm business,” he confessed.

In no apparent hurry, he finally located an ancient manual and told Jon to cut the “green” wire. Just as Jon was about to cut the green wire, the man changed his mind. “No! Cut the brown one,” he said.

“Well, which is it? The green or the brown?” Jon asked, as I stood, frantically holding as many of the kids as I could and trying to stop our collective ears bleeding. “The brown one. It says the brown one,” the sleepy man repeated. We closed our eyes and prayed as Jon tentatively cut the brown wire. The beeping stopped. The relief was immense. The children went back to bed. We had cut the power supply to the box and it never bothered us again.

In the same way, we need to find the roots of our insecurity and cut them off at source. I talk about this more fully in my book, “In Security”.

Psalm 91 gives us some clues about how God helps us to feel secure. We read in verse 1, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Can I ask you something? Are you dwelling in God’s shelter today? Do you feel at rest in His amazing shadow? Or are you “out from under” and feeling far off from the Lord? I have noticed that the further I am from Jesus, the more insecure I feel. Perhaps this is what you are facing too?

Prayer: Lord, please help me to come under your protection and authority in my life. Help me see what you see in me and work from a place of confidence and hope. Amen.

About this Plan

In Security – Ems Hancock

'Insecurity is based on doubt. It asks deep questions like “Do I matter? Am I important? Am I loved?” It also asks shallower questions like, “Does this suit me? Can I get away with this haircut?” Whoever you are and whatever you do, you will have times when you feel insecure. This plan offers simple practical ways to apply biblical truth when insecurity strikes.
