WORTHY OF WORSHIP
People behave differently when they are in the presence of someone they truly believe to be significant or important. Joshua’s response to the man in this passage demonstrated the significance of this enigmatic figure, who some scholars believe to be the pre-incarnate Christ. Joshua did what many will one day do when they meet Jesus — he fell on his face in reverence. Much about the figure in this passage is unclear — his name, his background and the way in which he appeared. He disclosed his identity in a similar cryptic form by saying that he was the commander of the Lord’s army. Joshua’s subsequent response also affirmed the greatness of this man. He humbled himself and awaited the instructions of one to whom honor is clearly due. Joshua demonstrated his submission and faithfulness to the appearance of God here near Jericho. One day, all people will give similar honor to God, as every knee will bow and every tongue will acknowledge that Jesus is Lord (Php 2:10 – 11). Some will bow in judgment and be cast away from God’s presence forever. Others will bow in worship of the one true King forever (Rev 1:17; 4:10; 7:11; 11:16).
Jesus, I can’t wait to fall on my face in your presence. But I also want to live fully submitted to you today. I want my heart to be bowed down to you at all times. Amen.
