Your Identity: The Boarding Pass
"And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” Matthew 16:18 NIV
To the world he was Simon, the fisherman. To some he was the betrayer. Neither Simon nor the world could see anything beyond that limited human view. But Jesus saw something beyond and called him Peter—the rock on which He would build His church.
What about you? How do you see yourself?
We tend to see ourselves through the eyes of this fallen world: a failure, an addict, arrogant, disrespectful, rejected, unloved and unwanted. Yet, Jesus says to you, “You are my beloved, my special possession, a royal priesthood, holy nation, blessed, healed, anointed, chosen to bring My will on earth.”
The Identity Card
We all have some form of identity card like a driver’s license or a passport. The identity card serves as proof of who we are. It enables us to travel, have memberships, buy, sell, own and have access to certain benefits. Similarly, when we get saved, our souls need an identity card that shows our membership has changed from a product of this fallen world to a child of the Almighty God. What the Word of God says about us must become the identity card of our souls. This identity card serves two main purposes:
1. A reminder to self
The world sees you from its fallen perspective. Therefore, it will constantly try to downgrade you and bring you to its level. If you constantly listen, speak, and act as the world does, that is what will reflect from you (Proverbs 23:7). But when you carry around the identity card provided by God, that will be your reflection. The truth of God’s Word needs to be ingrained in us and we need to be transformed by the renewing of our mind.
2. A reminder to the enemy kingdom
“One day the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?" Acts 19:15
The enemy can recognize one who doesn’t know his identity, even if he tags along with other believers and outwardly acts like one. If a believer doesn’t know who he is in Christ and of the freedom he has in Christ, the enemy can easily deceive or manipulate him. And the more you meditate on God’s Word, the more your identity in Christ will be revealed.
To fly high with Jesus, we must have a rooted knowledge of our identity in Christ. That’s your boarding pass! Keep it safe and keep it always with you.
