Following Jesus

DAY 8 OF 15

Following Jesus takes a squad

Are there things that we need to do on our own? Absolutely. For example, going to the bathroom and reading a book are both better solo.

Following Jesus is not something we do on our own. God designed us to need each other. He exists in community — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — and He made us in His image. We were made for connection with God and each other.

Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us to “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

The day the writer describes is the day Jesus comes back. The way we stay faithful from now until Jesus returns is by spending time together, sharing our successes and failures, and supporting each other as we follow Jesus.

Following Jesus is more fun with a squad around you. Even Jesus had a squad — the 12 disciples.

In this kind of community, we give and receive encouragement. We sacrifice for one another and we cheer for one another. We point out when we’re loving others well, and we pray for one another when God tells us to do something hard.

This kind of community doesn’t just happen. It’s something we find when we invest in friendships day after day and week after week. But when we find this kind of community, it’s amazing!

Reflect:

  • Who are your friends who are also friends with God?
  • What’s one way your community is encouraging you toward love and good works?
