Following JesusSample
Why we read the Bible
Have you ever wondered why your pastor and small group leaders are on your case about reading your Bible? What could stories from thousands of years ago possibly teach us today?
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
The Bible is a one-stop shop for everything we need to follow Jesus well. The Bible is an amazing gift from God. It is completely trustworthy, and as we read it, we are equipped for all that God has for us to accomplish.
If you’ve ever wondered how to hear from God or what His voice sounds like, all you have to do is open the Bible. Scripture helps us hear from God and learn how to follow Jesus closely.
The Bible is not a religious playbook or a homework assignment for Christians. No, it’s God’s words written down for us know and treasure. All we have to do is pick it up, ask the Holy Spirit to guide us through it, and watch as God begins to reveal Himself to us.
Try asking these questions every time you read and see what happens:
- What does this show me about God’s character?
- What matters to God or Jesus in this passage? Does it matter to me?
- Does God give any commands or instructions?
- Does God make any promises? (Look for statements that start with “I will...”)
Psalm 119:105 calls the Bible “a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” When we read the Bible looking to learn about God and how to follow Him, it becomes like a streetlight keeping us on His path.
Reflect:
- Philippians 4:9 tells us to put into practice the things we learn. What’s one thing you’ve learned in this study that you’re already putting into practice?
- How is reading the Bible and learning to follow Jesus making a difference in your life?
